Construction and validation of a questionnaire to study engagement in informal second language learning

Abstract This article reports on the development and validation of Informal Second Language Engagement questionnaire (ISLE) for capturing various aspects learner engagement with informal second language practices. Whereas other questionnaires have primarily focused behavior (the frequency, quantity, diversity activities in which learners engage), ISLE additionally targets affective, cognitive, linguistic engagement. Consequently, this has potential to help acquisition researchers better understand individual differences variability engagement, how it changes over time, ways affects learning. The was developed evaluated three stages a total 382 German secondary school English as foreign language. initial instrument informed by qualitative findings from focus group interviews. Subsequently, piloted, Exploratory Factor Analysis applied data uncover underlying factor structures reduce number items per construct. Finally, revised further using Confirmatory Analysis.
